A common mole is a growth on the skin that develops when pigment groups of skin cells grow together in clusters. Most people have between 10 and 40 common moles throughout their bodies. Most moles are present at birth but can continue to appear until approximately age 40. After that age, common moles tend to fade and disappear.
Types of Moles
There are several types of moles that appear on the skin:
A common mole – a small pink, tan, or brown growth on the skin, with a distinct edge. Most common moles do not turn into dangerous types of moles, such as ones that turn into melanoma, a skin cancer that can be deadly. However, research has shown that people who have more than 50 common moles have a greater chance of developing moles that turn into melanoma.
A an unusual mole or dysplastic mole – is often large, flat, with a non- symmetrical shape and is a mix of pink, tan, or brown shades. These types of moles have a greater chance than others of developing melanoma, but most do not.
