Dermaplaning is another method for removing superficial cells or the outermost layer of the skin. Instead of using an exfoliating tip, however, dermaplaning makes use of a blade to essentially “shave” away dead skin cells. It has been found to be an effective way of revealing new skin that is softer and smoother. This technique is also very useful for removing “peach fuzz,” or the tiny vellus hairs on the face.
What should I expect from dermaplaning?
To dermaplane the skin, the doctor uses a sterile surgical blade, or a dermatome, to remove the surface skin cells and even out imperfections. With a motion similar to shaving, the doctor moves the blade across the skin, using mild pressure to provide deep exfoliation without damaging the skin. Dermaplaning is useful in treating wrinkles, dark spots, and facial hair. To minimize acne scarring, this procedure can specifically remove excess skin around “craters” left by acne marks to even them out and smooth the skin.
