Blue Light Treatment
What is Blue Light Therapy?
Blue Light therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that uses visible 400-nanometer light to target and eliminate acne-causing bacteria on the skin. FDA-approved for moderate acne, this therapy can be administered alone or combined with topical aminolevulinic acid (ALA) to boost effectiveness. The treatment helps reduce the number of acne papules and pustules safely and gently.
Benefits of Blue Light Therapy
Compared to dermabrasion, chemical peels, or laser treatments, this therapy offers several advantages: it causes little to no discomfort, requires no anesthesia or downtime, and has minimal risk. It is suitable for all skin types and involves no recovery period, allowing patients to quickly return to daily activities.
What to Expect During Treatments
When used alone, Blue Light therapy typically involves eight sessions spaced two weeks apart, with each session lasting about 16 minutes. If combined with ALA, three treatments spaced two weeks apart are usually recommended. In this combined approach, ALA is applied topically for about 30 minutes before exposure to Blue Light for 8 minutes. Treatment length and number of sessions may vary based on acne severity. Mild side effects such as slight stinging or redness can occur but usually resolve within 30 minutes after treatment. There is a rare chance of skin pigmentation changes.
